What
is the Campaign for Fiscal Equity?
Our
Mission Statement:
Founded
in 1993, The
Campaign for Fiscal Equity, Inc., a not-for-profit corporation, seeks to ensure adequate resources and the opportunity for a sound basic
education for all students in New York City. Our efforts have also helped
secure the same opportunity for students throughout the state who are
not currently receiving a sound basic education.
What
is the significance of CFE v. State?
In 1993, CFE filed a constitutional challenge to New York State's
school finance system, claiming that it underfunds New York City's public
schools and denies its students their constitutional right to the opportunity
for a sound basic education. In 2003, the Court of Appeals, the state's
highest court, ruled in favor of CFE and ordered the State to undertake
sweeping reforms. Unfortunately the state did not address the Court's order and CFE was forced to go back to the Courts again. In November 2006, the Court of Appeals rendered its final decision in the case. read more
