Fails to Present Progress Report in Education Funding Reform City and State
Officials Join CFE in Calling on Governor Pataki to Act Immediately to Develop
a New State School Funding Formula CFE held a press conference on June 15 on the steps of the State Supreme Court in Manhattan to call on Governor George Pataki to move forward in reforming the State's education funding formula. CFE and key city and state officials criticized the state for failing to present any progress in reform and perpetuating a school finance system that has already denied a generation of children their constitutional right to a sound basic education. CFE Executive Director Michael Rebell was joined at the press conference by State Comptroller H. Carl McCall, Assemblyman Steve Sanders, Bronx Borough President Fernando Ferrer, City Comptroller Alan Hevesi, UFT President Randi Weingarten, Alliance for Quality Education Executive Director Regina Eaton, Simpson Thacher & Bartlett Attorney Joseph Wayland, and Robert Jackson, the parent who initiated the CFE lawsuit. In his decision,
Justice DeGrasse ordered a June 15 deadline for New York State and CFE to
present the court with their progress made on reforms outlined in the decision.
The Governor has appealed the decision and refused to appear to report on
progress on June 15. Since the decision, however, CFE has taken up the Court's
charge to develop real reform and was present on June 15 to present its findings
from a series of public forums and community roundtables that found widespread
support across the state for Justice DeGrasse's common-sense solutions. |
