PUBLIC SCHOOL CAPACITY REPORTS

NEW YORK, NY – New York City Comptroller John C. Liu stated the following in response to
questions about an ongoing audit on New York City school capacity “Blue Books”:
“In many growing areas throughout the City, schools continue to lack appropriate classroom
facilities. School sites are plagued by overcrowding and bursting at the seams for real school
seats. There has been much fanfare in recent years about ‘new school openings’, yet parents,
teachers and principals have seen little alleviation in overcrowding. The first step is to ensure the accuracy and reliability of data on current school capacity.”
Earlier this year, the Campaign for Fiscal Equity (CFE) brought data to the attention of the
Comptroller's Office and based on an internal review, raised valid concerns that were appropriate
to audit. The Comptroller's Office, through its Open Audit program, welcomes suggestions on
how to improve City program efficiency and effectiveness.
